Chrysalyne Schmults, M.D., MSCE

Dr. Schmults is dedicated to patient care, clinical innovation, research, and teaching in the arena of skin cancer with a focus on cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC) and other non-melanoma cancers. CSCC is a very common cancer typically treated in the U.S. by a form of surgical excision called Mohs Micrographic Surgery, in which Dr. Schmults has advanced fellowship training. The tumor is removed and the entire marginal surface is examined by the surgeon microscopically to ensure a meticulously clear margin. Dr. Schmults focused her clinical and research work on the subset of patients with aggressive disease. She currently spends 50% of her time in clinical activities and teaching, with the balance being devoted to clinical research and leadership. Dr. Schmults directed the BWH Mohs and Dermatologic Surgery Center from her recruitment to BWH in 2007 until 2019, when she assumed a Vice Chair role. Dr. Schmults founded the High-Risk Skin Cancer Clinic at BW/DFCI as well as the ACGME-accredited BWH Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology Fellowship. She chairs the steering committee of the department’s Clinical Research Program. On the national level Dr. Schmults has served on the Board of Directors of the American College of Mohs Surgery and is the current chair of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer Panel and Board Member of the American Society of Dermatolgic Surgery. On the international level, Dr. Schmults is the Secretary (ascending to President) of the International Society of Dermatologic Surgery, editor of the first textbook on high-risk CSCC, and co-founder and President of the Skin Cancer Outcomes (SCOUT) Consortium.
